What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a biocompatible artificial tooth root used to replace a missing tooth. The implant has three main components: a titanium screw that is placed into the jaw bone, an abutment that will serve as a connection between the artificial tooth and root.
How are dental implants done?
Our dentists in Ryde will begin the procedure with a series of diagnostic tests to determine if you have a healthy jaw bone. This includes a 3D dental scan, a dental cast of your teeth, and a full medical history to ensure the safety of the procedure. Once your dentist has confirmed that you are a suitable candidate for a dental implant, the next step would be the implant placement surgery.
To start the procedure itself, your dentist will make a small incision in the gums to expose the jawbone. The gum tissue will be retained to support the dental implant. Next, your dentist will make a series of drills on the jaw bone to form a hole. The titanium screw is then placed into the bone. To ensure the bone has healed and stabilised the implant, the dentist will usually wait 2-3 months before the next step.
After the healing period, the abutment will be fitted into the titanium screw. The abutment will act as a support and connector for the crown that will be placed afterwards. Using the dental cast of your teeth, your dentist will form the artificial crown with a perfect fit. The crown is then attached on top of the abutment.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
Dental implants have significant advantages over other tooth replacement options, such as dentures and bridges. The primary benefit of dental implants is the process of osseointegration, where the biological process of bone fusing tightly with the surface of titanium will create a more stable, long-term result. The secure fit using the jawbone allows the dental implant to withstand greater biting forces compared to dentures.
Aesthetically, the dental implant looks completely normal and even indistinguishable from natural teeth. It also doesn’t disrupt your oral care routine. You can brush, floss, and swish mouthwash like normal, unlike dentures that require you to remove them at night.
