What Is Gum Disease?
Periodontal or Gum Disease occurs when plaque that is normally found in the mouth causes inflammation of the gums, and sometimes destruction of the bone. Harmful bacteria group together and release chemicals that cause inflammation of the gums and the bone that supports the teeth – resulting in very poor gum health. When left untreated, this inflammation can lead to receding gums, loss of bone from around the teeth and eventual tooth loss. There are two different types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. The latter can cause the destructive bone loss.
Symptoms of Gum Disease:
- Red, swollen and bleeding gums
- Persistent bad breath
- Loose teeth
- Tooth sensitivity
The bacteria associated with periodontal disease can travel into the bloodstream and may result in other adverse health effects besides the damaging of gum tissue. Studies show that gum disease can be linked with heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer, arthritis and preterm births. Early detection and treatment of periodontal disease is important if you wish to have overall good health.

Different types of Gum Disease:
- HEALTHY GUMS: Firm, pink gums that do not bleed when your dentist probes them, or when you are brushing or flossing.
- GINGIVITIS: Red, swollen gums, bleeds when they are probed or when you brush and floss. There is a potential risk of gum tissue loss but no bone loss.
- EARLY PERIODONTITIS: Red, swollen gums, bleeds when probed or when brushing or flossing. A pocket formation (gaps between the gum and the tooth) at the gum occurs, which can be detected by your dentist. Inflammation occurs as a result of bacteria and the loss of gum attachment and bone support for the teeth begins.
- ADVANCED PERIODONTITIS: Heavy bleeding when flossing, brushing or probed by a dentist. Severe loss of gum attachment and deep pockets form. There will usually be significant destruction of the bone support which leads to tooth mobility, teeth drifting or movement, pus and potentially tooth loss.
